Age-staged guidance for foster carers and supervising social workers

Children notice race long before adults expect them to, and they need someone safe to talk to about it. In this course, you'll learn what to say, at every age, so the child in your care feels seen, proud and protected.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: Why Talking About Race Matters
• Module 2: How Racial Identity Develops
• Module 3: Conversations at Every Age
• Module 4: Preparing For and Responding to Racism
• Module 5: Your Learning and Positive Identity

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

What will i learn?

• Explain why silence and 'colour-blindness' can harm children
• Describe, in general terms, how racial identity develops
• Use age-appropriate words with under-5s, primary children and teenagers
• Prepare a child for racism without making them afraid
• Respond to a racist incident: listen, believe, validate, act, record and tell
• Build a child's positive racial identity, and keep learning yourself
