For foster carers and social workers caring for children of African heritage

Many children in care have roots in Africa. Some arrived in the UK alone, seeking safety. Many more were born here to African parents. Too often, the Africa they meet in the media is a single, narrow story. In this course, you'll learn about the real continent, past and present, so you can help each child feel proud of exactly where they come from.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: Scale and Diversity
• Module 2: Young, Urban and Creative
• Module 3: Unlearning Stereotypes
• Module 4: Faith, Names, Food and Dress
• Module 5: African Heritage in the UK

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

What will i learn?

• Describe Africa's scale: its 54 countries, regions and many languages
• Explain why Africa is young, fast-growing and increasingly urban
• Recognise contemporary African innovation, creativity and cooperation
• Challenge common stereotypes, and explain colonialism's legacy with care
• Show respect for a child's faith, name, food and dress
• Help a child stay connected to their specific country and community
