Everyday cultural continuity in the foster home, for foster carers

When a child moves into foster care, almost everything changes at once. The smell of the kitchen, the music in the house, the way the day begins and ends. In this course, you'll learn how the small, everyday parts of culture can help a child feel at home, and stay connected to who they are.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: Why Everyday Culture Matters
• Module 2: Food and the Family Table
• Module 3: Faith in the Foster Home
• Module 4: Festivals and Celebrations
• Module 5: Hair, Music, Language and You

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

What will i learn?

• Explain why everyday culture supports belonging, identity and continuity
• Plan meals that respect a child's diet, faith, preferences and allergies
• Support a child's faith in line with their wishes and those with parental responsibility
• Celebrate the festivals that matter to the child, by asking rather than assuming
• Treat hair care, music, language and media as part of daily culture
• Recognise and avoid tokenism, including when your own faith differs
