Music, identity and belonging for children of the African and Caribbean diaspora

Music carries history, language, faith and memory. For children of the African and Caribbean diaspora, it can be a thread back to family and heritage. In this course, you'll explore the sounds that shaped Black Britain, and how you can use music to connect with the children in your care.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: Music, Identity and Heritage
• Module 2: Caribbean Roots, British Scenes
• Module 3: African and American Sounds
• Module 4: Beyond the Stereotypes
• Module 5: Music for Connection

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

What will i learn?

• Explain how music carries history, identity and belonging
• Describe the roots of reggae, and where ska and rocksteady fit
• Recognise key Caribbean and British genres, from lovers rock to grime
• Tell Afrobeat and Afrobeats apart, and place hip hop and R&B in the diaspora story
• Discuss drill, grime and crime in a balanced, non-stereotyping way
• Use music to build connection, while checking what is age-appropriate
