Black boys bring joy, talent, humour and big dreams into our homes, schools and services, yet they also face unfair risks: adultification, school exclusion, disproportionate stop and search, exploitation and online racism. This course gives everyone who cares for or works with Black boys the knowledge and confidence to build his pride, keep him safe and open up every possibility.
Across five short modules you will explore identity, heritage, hair and emotional literacy; recognise and challenge adultification and bias; talk calmly and honestly about police, knives, exploitation and online harm; advocate for high expectations in education; and plan for a positive transition to adulthood.
Each module includes a 'theory behind the practice' slide, drawing on key research and thinkers including Goff et al. (2014) on adultification, Bernard Coard (1971), David Gillborn, Steele and Aronson on stereotype threat, William Cross on racial identity, Majors and Billson's 'cool pose', Kimberlé Crenshaw's intersectionality, Carlene Firmin's contextual safeguarding and Ann Masten's 'ordinary magic'. Designed for foster and kinship carers, social workers, residential care staff, fostering panel members and other professionals.
