Course description

For foster carers and social workers who want to see the whole child, and the whole carer

No child is only their race, or only their faith, or only their care status. The same is true of every foster carer. In this course, you'll learn where the idea of intersectionality comes from, what it really means, and how to use it in matching, assessment and everyday support.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: What Intersectionality Means
• Module 2: Intersectionality and the Law
• Module 3: The Whole Child
• Module 4: The Whole Carer
• Module 5: Putting It Into Practice

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

• Explain Kimberlé Crenshaw's concept of intersectionality accurately
• Name the nine protected characteristics in the Equality Act 2010
• Recognise what the law does not cover, such as class and immigration status
• Describe how different parts of identity interact for children in care
• Recognise how identity shapes carers' experiences of assessment and support
• Use an intersectional lens in matching and assessment, without ranking oppressions
