Seeing children as children: for foster carers and supervising social workers

Every child deserves to be seen as a child: to be protected, comforted and forgiven. But some children, especially Black children, are too often seen as older and less innocent than they are. In this course, you'll learn how to spot that, and how to stand up for the children in your care.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: What Adultification Bias Is
• Module 2: Where It Shows Up
• Module 3: Gender, Exploitation and Language
• Module 4: Recognising It in Others and Ourselves
• Module 5: Challenging It, Protecting Childhood

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

• Explain what adultification bias is and what the evidence shows
• Recognise how it shows up in schools, policing, health, care and justice
• Understand how it links to gender and to criminal and sexual exploitation
• Spot language that makes children sound older or more to blame
• Notice adultification in professionals and in yourself
