Understanding and Responding to Behaviour: for foster carers

Every foster carer meets behaviour that tests them: the slammed door, the swearing, the child who pushes you away just when you're trying to get close. In this course, we'll look at what that behaviour might be telling you, and how to respond in a way that keeps everyone safe and helps the child feel understood.

This interactive e-learning course has 6 short modules:

• Module 1: Behaviour as Communication
• Module 2: PACE: Connecting First
• Module 3: De-escalation and Boundaries
• Module 4: What Carers Can and Cannot Do
• Module 5: Seeing Behaviour Fairly
• Module 6: Recording, Self-care and Help

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

What will i learn?

• Explain why behaviour is a form of communication, especially after trauma
• Describe PACE accurately and use it in everyday moments
• Calm a situation down and set boundaries and consequences that teach
• Know what the regulations and standards allow, and what they forbid
• Recognise racial bias, including adultification, in how behaviour is seen
• Record incidents clearly, look after yourself and know when to get help
