Supporting young people leaving care: for foster carers and supervising social workers

Most young people leave home gradually, in their twenties, and know they can always come back. Young people in care often have to grow up much faster. In this course, you'll learn how to help the young people you care for move into adulthood feeling prepared, supported and proud of who they are.

This interactive e-learning course has 5 short modules:

• Module 1: Turning 18: What Changes
• Module 2: Staying Put and Staying Close
• Module 3: Preparing for Independence
• Module 4: Entitlements, Education and Work
• Module 5: Feelings, Identity and Staying Connected

It includes narration, practical scenarios and a final quiz of 12 questions (80% pass mark). You can learn at your own pace on any device, and you'll receive a certificate when you complete the course.

What will i learn?

• Explain what changes legally when a young person in care turns 18
• Describe the role of the personal adviser and the pathway plan
• Explain Staying Put and Staying Close, and who each is for
• Help young people build practical skills for independence from 15 or 16
• Signpost leaving care entitlements, including support for university and apprenticeships
• Support the emotional, identity and relationship needs of Black and global majority care leavers
