Course description

Crown Care is part of BFCA's Crown & Current programme, which brings together swimming and hair care for children and young people in care.

For many Black and global majority children, hair is deeply connected to identity, culture and self-worth. When hair is neglected, misunderstood or damaged, children can feel embarrassed, different or disconnected from their heritage. This course gives carers the knowledge and confidence to care for Afro and textured hair well, and to turn hair care into time for connection rather than conflict.

In this course you will explore:

• Why hair care is an identity and wellbeing issue, not just a grooming task
• Understanding different hair types, textures and porosity
• Washing, conditioning, moisturising and detangling routines
• Protective styles and how to care for hair between styles
• Protecting hair before and after swimming (chlorine, swim caps and aftercare)
• Choosing products and tools, and finding culturally competent hairdressers
• Talking with children about their hair and building their confidence
• Recording hair care in care plans and involving birth family where appropriate

Suitable for foster carers, kinship carers, special guardians, parents and professionals supporting children with Afro and textured hair.

What will i learn?

• Explain why hair care is central to a child's identity, self-esteem and cultural connection

• Follow a safe wash, condition, moisturise and detangle routine
• Protect hair before and after swimming and during active routines
• Choose suitable products, tools and culturally competent hairdressers
• Use hair care time to build trust and positive conversations with the child
• Record hair care needs appropriately in the child's care plan
